Why it’s on the record. In June 2023, Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted Trump on federal charges, including willful retention of national defense information, for keeping classified documents at Mar-a-Lago after leaving office. The case was dismissed in July 2024 on the ground that the special counsel's appointment was unlawful, and later dropped.
